FINANCIAL MARKETS
Crypto markets came roaring back this week, with Bitcoin climbing more than 20% and briefly approaching $80,000 as investors reacted to a major shift in the bond market. The rally accelerated after the U.S. Treasury announced it would double planned buybacks of longer-dated government bonds, helping lower yields and weaken the dollar. While some have labeled the move “QE,” it is technically different from Federal Reserve quantitative easing, though the market appears to be trading it similarly: more liquidity and less pressure on financial assets. Bitcoin, often viewed as a hedge against currency debasement, benefited alongside gold as investors revisited the broader de-dollarization trade. The move was amplified by billions in short liquidations and renewed ETF demand, sending Ethereum and other cryptocurrencies higher as well. Whether this rally lasts remains to be seen, but crypto is once again proving how quickly it responds when global liquidity expectations begin to change.

The summer heat has been no joke this year, with temperature records falling across the globe. France experienced an unprecedented stretch, with July becoming one of the country’s hottest months on record. The heat has affected more than just people, reaching France’s greenery, including Claude Monet’s famous gardens in Giverny. Increasingly unpredictable temperatures have forced gardeners to reconsider planting schedules, irrigation, and even which plants can survive there long term. Elsewhere, Vans announced a collaboration with Fugazi, an independent streetwear brand. The problem? Many assumed it involved Fugazi, the influential Washington, D.C., post-hardcore band famous for its anti-commercial ethos. The confusion sparked enough controversy that Vans executive Steve Van Doren apologized and clarified there was no connection. Vans ultimately canceled the wider release, but Fugazi responded by offering much of the shelved collection for just $5 a pair. Maybe “no publicity is bad publicity” really does hold true, at least if you’re Fugazi, the streetwear brand.

Vince Staples just added another acting credit to his résumé after landing a role in the upcoming NBA 2K27. Rather than making a typical celebrity cameo, Staples will play Cam, the cousin of the lead character in the game’s MyPLAYER storyline. The Long Beach rapper provided both his voice and motion-capture performance for the role ahead of the game’s September 4 release. Speaking of rappers and the NBA, NBA YoungBoy recently revealed on the Open Thoughts podcast that he has moved to South Korea with no plans to return to the United States. YoungBoy explained that he enjoys being both physically and emotionally removed from his Louisiana roots and the environment surrounding his career. More surprisingly, the rapper also opened up about a heart condition that he says has begun limiting his ability to make music, suggesting he may only have one or two albums left in him.

The FedEx Cup Playoffs are in full swing, with only the top 50 golfers remaining in the hunt for the PGA Tour Championship. After the BMW Championship concludes this weekend, that field will shrink again, with only the top 30 advancing to next weekend’s Tour Championship. Alongside the conclusion of the PGA Tour season comes something even better: college football. The 2026-27 season kicks off next weekend in Ireland, where TCU will take on Bill Belichick’s UNC Tar Heels. The “other” football, which gained plenty of new American fans during this summer’s World Cup, is returning as well. If you’re new to European soccer, the major leagues to follow include the English Premier League, beginning today, Italy’s Serie A, starting tomorrow, and Germany’s Bundesliga, kicking off next Friday. Thankfully, this will officially be our final edition without football, of either kind, taking over our televisions.

She’ll be joined by Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Maya Boyd as Storm, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, and Adam Driver as villain Mister Sinister.
